YESTERDAY was full of joy for 15 poor, destitute and underprivileged people as they received their houses, financed by tithe money from the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB).
The guest of honour, Minister of Religious Affairs, Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman in his capacity as the President of MUIB, handed the housing certificates to 12 recipients from Kampong Tagap II, Kampong Sengkurong, and three from Kampong Parit, Kampong Junjungan and Kampong Lumapas in the Brunei-Muara District.
The minister later toured two of the houses in Kampong Tagap II while the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, Dato Paduka Awang Haji Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud, in his capacity as the Vice-President of MUIB, toured three other houses.
Out of the 15 stilt houses that were handed over, eight have four bedrooms while seven have three rooms.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the home assistance is a project carried-out by several government agencies including the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Development, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
The construction project of these houses is financed by MUIB through tithe money. The total cost of these 15 houses amounted to $958,156.
This assistance is a display of concern by the Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in the welfare of the poor, destitute and the underprivileged by providing them with a comfortable living condition.
Also in attendance was a member of the Legislative Council, YB Haji Mohimin bin Haji Johari @ Jahari.
The Acting Secretary of MUIB, Haji Abdul Aziz bin Haji Akop told the media that since the project was launched, some 70 assisted housing have been handed over, excluding those from yesterday.
He explained that assisted housing through MUIB is given to those who are “unable to build their house as a shelter” and also ineligible to apply for the national housing scheme.
