THE Brunei History Centre under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports in cooperation with the Department of Co-curriculum Education of the Ministry of Education and Radio Television Brunei (RTB) under the Prime Minister’s Office will hold the 3rd History Oratory Competition on April 5.
Hanafi bin Haji Salleh, Acting Deputy Principal of the Brunei History Centre, at a press conference yesterday, explained that the competition is a medium or method in delivering and distributing Brunei’s history to students, as it is important for students to know, understand and learn history as it can give guidance, education, examples and lessons.
The acting deputy principal also explained that this is the first time the competition will run with a theme entitled ‘Sejarah Melakar Pembangunan Negara Bangsa’, or loosely translated as ‘History Shaping the Development of the Nation State’.
The objectives of the com-petition are to absorb the cul-ture of critical thinking amongst students on the secondary and higher education levels; to improve the students’ thinking in making interpretations and re-evaluations on historical events in the country; to train students to use methods of real history research and studies; to develop the skills and interests of students in the field of history research; to make history a field that is interesting to learn, research and understand; to give awareness to the young generation on the value of history towards the development of the country; and to plant a feeling of love towards the ruler, religion, country and nation.
The competition is divided into three categories, namely Category ‘A’ for students in the government or private higher educational institutions (not including students that are in-service with the government); Category B for students in government or private pre-universities (not including students that are in-service with the government); and Category C for Years 9, 10 and 11 students from government or private secondary schools.
The requirements of the competition include the participation of the competition through participation forms provided by the organisers; participation is open to the government or private higher educational institutions, pre-universities and secondary schools all over the country; participants who have won any oratory competition on an international level are not allowed to compete; Category A participants for higher educational institutions are not limited, while those in Category B can send three participants to represent their pre-universities, and those in Category C are only allowed to send one participant to represent their secondary schools – each participant that successfully advances into the finals is required to produce an oratory script for submission to the organisers at least two weeks prior to the date of the finals.
Hanafi also explained that the participants must present in Malay, and are given three minutes to present during the preliminary rounds.
The organisers have prepared 12 topics for the competition. They are ‘Sejarah Dilupa Manusia Alpa’ (History Forgotten by Alpha Humans); ‘Sultan Hashim Jalilul ‘Alam Aqamaddin Penyelamat MIB’ (Sultan Hashim Jalilul ‘Alam Aqamaddin the Saviour of MIB); ‘Kesultanan Brunei Abad Ke-16 dan Ke-17 Tunggak Islam di Alam Melayu’ (16th and 17th Centuries Brunei Sultanate, the Pillar of Islam in the Malay World); ‘Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Raja Insan Lagi Dermawan’ (Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, a Generous King); ‘Dunia Barat Meneladani Zaman Kegemilangan Keilmuan Islam’ (The Western World Emulating the Golden Age of Is-lamic Knowledge); ‘Nasionalisme dan Patriotisme: Dimana Semangat Melayu?’ (Nationalism and Patriotism: Where is the Malay Spirit?); ‘Sejauh Mana Perang Saudara Meruntuhkan Kesultanan Brunei’ (How Far Did the Civil War Break Down the Brunei Sultanate): ‘Kedatangan Kuasa Barat Bagai Racun dan Penawar kepada Brunei’ (The Arrival of Western Powers as a Poison and Cure for Brunei); ‘Mempertingkatkan Ekonomi Melestari MIB’ (Enhancing the Economy Preserving MIB); ‘Daya Cipta Masyarakat Brunei Yang Hilang’ (The Will of Creating of the Brunei Society Lost); ‘Sejarah Signifikan dalam Penyediaan Dasar yang Berkualiti’ (History Significant in Preparing Quality Policies); and ‘Sejarah Penting dalam Memelihara dan Mempertahankan Negara’ (History is Important in Preserving and Maintaining the Country).
