THE 6th National Education Forum 2016 drew to a close yesterday with a presentation of Incentive Awards to 14 secondary schools that have made notable improvements in their 2014/15 BCGCE ‘O’ Level and IGCSE examinations.
On hand at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas to present the awards during the ceremony was the Deputy Minister of Education, Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar.
The first category of awarded schools was for those that achieved or exceeded the targeted percentage (452.5 per cent) in their ‘O’ Level and IGCSE exams.
Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Masna Secondary School achieved top rankings with 55.28 per cent, followed by the Sufri Bolkiah Secondary School with 53.28 per cent, Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Secondary School with 46.15 per cent and Sayyidina Hasan Secondary School with 43.5 per cent.
All four schools each received a sum of $7,000 as well as a certificate of excellence.

The second category saw Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar Secondary School retaining its 100 per cent passing mark in five ‘O’ Level and IGCSE exams for the years 2014 and 2015.
The school received an incentive amounting $3,000 and a certificate of acknowledgment.
For the last category, incentives were awarded to schools that achieve significant improvements for exam results in terms of percentage increased between 2014 and 2015.
The top two rankings were achieved by the Sultan Hassan Secondary School in Bangar, Temburong, with a 14.53 per cent increase – 11.26 per cent (in 2014) to 25.79 per cent (2015) – and Perdana Wazir Secondary School with a 12.99 per cent increase – 16.38 per cent (2014) to 29.37 per cent (2015).
Both schools received an incentive of $5,000 each as well as certificates.
Meanwhile, Sufri Bolkiah Secondary School and Muda Hashim Secondary School each received a $3,000 incentive in the similar category, while 10 other schools were given honourable mentions for their achievements.
Prior to the presentation, an international consultant from the United Kingdom, Dr Coleen Jakson, lauded the school leaders for their achievements and contributions through the Brunei Programme for Senior School Leaders (BPSSL).
“It is clear, that Brunei has some stunning school leaders,” she remarked.
The day also saw the presentation of a working paper that is centred on the issues implementation of Brunei Leadership Standards and the Way Forward for Brunei Programmes for Senior School Leaders to the deputy minister from the consultants.
In March last year, the Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Advancement (ILIA) of Universiti Brunei Darussalam and the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) of Nottingham , UK as well as the Ministry of Education (MoE) embraced a training and professional development programme for local school leaders – the Brunei Programme for Senior School Leaders.
The programme focuses on developing a school leader’s personal leadership; leadership in teaching and learning; leading people and effective team-leading and managing the organisation, as well as leading and managing transformational changes.
