PERSATUAN Kebajikan Melayu SeMalaysia (PKMS) in Brunei Darussalam celebrated its 50th anniversary yesterday, with an official launching of the ‘Karnival Jubli Emas’ (Golden Jubilee Carnival) at the Indoor Stadium in Berakas, bringing over 80 vendors together under one roof.
Present as the guest of honour at the launching was Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, the Minister of Home Affairs.
A welcoming speech was delivered by Haji Azaman bin Haji Sulaiman, President of PKMS, in which he spoke of PKMS’s main goal of establishing itself as an organisation in service of the community.
“It is hoped that bringing Bruneian and Malaysian businesses together will strengthen the bonds between the two communities,” he said.
After the launch, the minister was invited on a tour of the booths at the Indoor Stadium.
The five-day carnival is an amalgamation of local vendors or small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and entrepreneurs from neighbouring Sarawak.
Among the highlights are product promotions by Malaysian artistes, a ‘teh tarik’ challenge, a lucky draw, a lookalike contest for all ages, a baby contest and a fashion contest for preschool children.
There will also be a cooking competition for professionals and amateurs as well as an exhibition on Sarawak culinary delights by MOA Sarawak.
