THE Deputy Minister of Defence, First Admiral (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Abdul Aziz bin Haji Mohamad Tamit, represented Brunei Darussalam at the Asean-Russia Defence Ministers’ Informal Meeting.
The meeting, chaired by Army General Sergey Shoygu, Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation, was held at the Russian Defence Control National Centre, Ministry of Defence, in Moscow.
According to a press release, Shoygu expressed his appreciation on the support given by the Asean counterparts, and underscored the importance of the meeting in reviewing the progress of defence cooperation between both sides and identifying future activities to further enhance defence relations between the Asean member countries and Russia.
With the theme of ‘20 years of defence partnership between Asean and Russia’, the meeting was timely held ahead of the 20th Asean-Russia Commemorative Summit in Sochi next month.
During the meeting, Asean Defence Ministers welcomed Russia’s commitment and continued support to the ADMM-Plus framework, especially in maritime security, counter-terrorism, military medicine, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief and humanitarian demining.
Both sides also exchanged views on issues of global and regional security as well as discussed ways to enhance military-to-military cooperation.
The Asean ministers later toured the National Defence Control Centre at the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation.
The deputy minister of defence of Brunei had the opportunity to meet the head of delegation of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Lieutenant General Chansamone Chanyalath, Minister of National Defence, who is also the current chair of the Asean Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM).
The deputy minister also attended a bilateral meeting with Anatoly Antonov, Deputy Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation, to discuss bilateral defence and military cooperation.
