THE topic of how you can get the best out of your employees took centre stage yesterday at a Human Resource (HR) Retreat Seminar.
Organised by the Centre for Islamic Banking, Finance and Management (CIBFM), the training arm under Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam (AMBD), the seminar took place at The Empire Hotel & Country Club.
The participants of the seminar included more than 30 officers and executives from various government agencies, financial institutions and the private sector.
Carrying the theme, ‘Getting the best out of your employees’, yesterday’s seminar gave participants the opportunity to learn best practices, exchange ideas and share experiences on challenges in building human talent.
The seminar also allowed participants to learn how to unlock their employees’ full potential through effective strategies and techniques as well as to recognise that employees are important assets of their organisations.
On hand to facilitate the proceedings were invited speakers Karen Goh, Practice Leader, Executive Leadership Development at Align SMA Pte Ltd and Johan Grundlingh, Managing Director of Carrots Consulting Pte Ltd.
Attending the event as the guest of honour was Hajah Nurliati binti Haji Md Idris, the Acting Deputy Managing Director of AMBD and Chairperson of CIBFM’s Executive Committee. She said, “I believe the theme, ‘Getting the best out of your employees’, is aptly chosen as it underlines the importance of employee engagement as recognition of human resources who are the most important asset of any organisation.”
“Their importance is more pronounced today as we require effective and efficient human resources who can withstand the test of time.
“A number of studies and research found that in getting the best out of our human resources, effective top-down and bottom-up communication and engagement of employee-employer and everyone in any organisation as well as recognition are vital in driving its success,” she added.
On this point, she went on to cite a report published in 2013 by Harvard Business Review Analytic Services. The report, she said, highlighted that 71 per cent of respondents ranked employee engagement as very important to achieving overall organisational success while 72 per cent of respondents ranked recognition given for high performers as having a significant impact on employee engagement. Only 24 per cent of respondents said employees in their organisation are highly engaged.
“The full report shows the importance of keeping employees engaged and the challenge to the employers is the need to improve employee engagement and develop tangible ways to measure the impact of the engagement initiatives.”
“Particularly for the financial industry, AMBD in pursuing its objectives is continuously collaborating with CIBFM in developing programmes and activities that would benefit the industry and the country as a whole and to promote life-long learning.”
On behalf of CIBFM, she expressed sincere appreciation to Align HR Group and Carrots Consulting, as well as the CIBFM team themselves for their efforts in the event’s preparation and arrangement.
“To the participants, I hope the topics and activities lined up in this programme will add value to you and your organisation. More importantly you will bring out the best that is in you to get the best out of your colleagues and members in your respective organisation,” she added.
The HR Retreat Seminar first saw the speakers give a presentation dealing with getting the best out of employees, before going into an interactive session that focused on the development of an employee engagement action plan. Break-sessions followed, before the participants, divided into groups, delivered presentations.
