A TOTAL of 27 women toured several private enterprises in the Brunei-Muara District yesterday, as part of the ‘Enhancing the Capacity for Single Mothers Programme’ conducted by the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB).
Among the tour itinerary were visits to Syarikat Haji Zainal bin Haji Safar and the Small Enterprise Food Incubator (IMPK) in Kampong Kilanas, which enabled the participants to get a firsthand look at the current development and progress of private entrepreneurship in Brunei.
The visits were also intended to educate the women of the major challenges and procedures that all entrepreneurs must face when starting their own businesses.
One of the participants was 46-year-old Rostinah binti Haji Adam of Kampong Katimahar, who depends on her late husband’s monthly pension to support her five children.
“Being a single mother and unemployed, I would like to put in more effort and work hard for the comfort and happiness of my children,” she told the Bulletin. “It is my priority to provide for them and help them to be self-sufficient in the future.”
She also hopes the project would continue to inspire more single mothers in Brunei to be enterprising and self-supporting.
The main goal of the YSHHB programme is to boost the participants’ entrepreneurial skills, while also providing assistance for single mothers to expand their respective businesses and market their products.
In addition, there are around 16 mentors comprising former senior government officials and women entrepreneurs who have volunteered to supervise, support and motivate the participants throughout the programme.
