PEHIN Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, received a courtesy call yesterday from representatives of World Rugby, the international governing body for the sport of rugby union.
The delegation comprised Ridzal Saat, the Rugby Services Manager for Asia, World Rugby, headquartered in Singapore; Benjamin van Rooyen, the Coordinator of ‘Get into Rugby’, Asia Rugby, headquartered in Dubai; and Dr Haji Kamaruddin bin Dato Seri Paduka Haji Talib, the President of the Brunei Rugby Football Union (BRFU).
During the meeting, the delegates expressed their main objective of introducing a ‘Get into Rugby’ project in all local schools, with the joint support of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the BRFU.
Brunei Darussalam has potential as a regional hub for rugby, with countries such as Japan prepared to help by providing equipment and training for instructors, under the sponsorship of World Rugby.

The minister, meanwhile, expressed a keen desire to provide the required support and assistance for the development of rugby at all levels.
BRFU is registered under World Rugby as an associate member, and the pilot project is expected to take place this year.
Also present during the courtesy call were senior officials from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
