Sisters top Storytelling Competition

TWO sisters from Datu Ratna Haji Mohd Jaafar Primary School, Kiarong were announced as the champion and runner-up for the Brunei-Muara District Level Storytelling Competition yesterday held at the Balai Sarmayuda of the Language and Literature Bureau (DBP) at the Old Airport, Berakas.

The champion, Siti Khadijah binti Mohammad Asnawi received $500 for her story titled ‘Ratapan Anak Tiri’; second prize winner, Siti Maisarah binti Mohammad Asnawi; and third prize winner, Dayangku Amirah Syahirunnisa’ binti Pengiran Haji Yahya from St Andrew’s School received $300 wach.

YB Naim bin Haji Kamis, a member of the Legislative Council presented the prizes and certificates to the winners as the guest of honour.

Acting Head of the Library Department, Emi Suryaney binti Haji Hipny said that various amendments have been made to the competition over the period of 34 years.

“The participants can enhance their creativity in delivering their stories to their audience and interacting with them by implementing the use of technological advancements such as video and sound systems,” she said.

She added that this helps the story to become more interesting hence giving an impact to the audience.

She said the competition is among the strategies of DBP in promoting a reading culture particularly among the youths.

She added that the competition also aims to increase interest among children to visit libraries as often as possible and participate in various activities such as learning, reading, interacting, entertainments and other beneficial activities that can be implemented in their education and life.

She said, “By participating in the competition, participants can learn new vocabulary while improving their Malay Language skills.”

The competition was open to children aged eight to 11 who were members of the DBP’s Library Service where 10 were selected out of 46 to compete in the district-level competition yesterday.
