NEVER in their wildest dreams did local designers Amnani binti Taib and Aziemah binti Ahmad, both graduates of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), imagine that their superior pattern-designing talents would one day see them working alongside Royal Insignia.
Amnani told the Sunday Bulletin she felt “privileged” when Royal Insignia approached them to work on its latest collection.
“It felt amazing to have my talents recognised. This collaboration represents not just myself, but also the country,” she said, adding that the opportunity “serves as a platform for me to spread my wings and become a great designer down the road”.
Amnani said the artworks of Vincent van Gogh and Quadri Monet often inspire her pattern designs, especially when it comes to her plants and landscape scenery. From there, she lets her creativity and ideas flow artistically.
“When I was asked to create pattern designs for the floral series, my inspiration primarily came from the flowers and plants featured on Brunei currency notes. I examined the motif and design of each of the flowers and plants, and understood it despite their intricate patterns,” she explained.
Amnani explained that juggling between being a designer and teacher has allowed her to explore both worlds.
Currently pursuing a Masters in Education, Amnani plans to teach Arts as her main stream, thereby enabling her to further polish her skills.
Meanwhile, Aziemah discovered her love for pattern designing while studying at the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts in the United Kingdom as part of her Discovery Year under UBD.
“While there, I had the opportunity to learn in depth about patterns, particularly the geometrical aspects to it.”
“Before designing a pattern, I thoroughly examine the motif. Then I work on turning it into something unique that relates to Brunei, by combining two or more motifs into one design,” she added.
