FIRE and Rescue personnel were advised to work on fostering a work culture based on teamwork, mutual trust and respect, show dedication and discipline in their roles and execute their responsibilities efficiently and productively.
Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs cum guest of honour Haji Idris bin Haji Md Ali highlighted this in his speech yesterday, during the Passing Out Parade for 39 firefighter recruits of the 47th squad.
The passing out parade at the Fire and Rescue Training Centre in Kampong Lambak Kanan marked the recruits’ completion of the Basic Firefighting Course.
The knowledge gained from the training is just a small part of being a firefighter, Haji Idris said, adding that it is when the recruits carry out their duties and responsibilities in real life situations that they really earn their money.
In addition to knowledge and skills, high discipline and professional commitment at all times will be required as well, he reminded the recruits.
He said, though the responsibilities shouldered by fire and rescue personnel are heavy, the blessings bestowed by Allah the Almighty onto them in carrying out their duties are even greater, especially since they are putting their own lives at risk for the safety and welfare of the people.
Emphasis was also placed on having all fire stations under the Brunei Fire and Rescue Department ensure that their machineries, equipment and other essential facilities are well-maintained and in good working condition.
“It is hoped that they (fire and rescue staff) will demonstrate full commitment and determination when carrying out their duties, complemented with good ethics and discipline, so that the department can become a first-rate public security institution – one which is competent and efficient – comparable with others in the region,” he said.
The guest of honour presented awards to the best male trainee in the “all field, theory, practical and physical training” category, and best trainer.
Throughout the basic firefighting training, the trainees were taught four main firefighting theories and underwent practical work. The four topics were: the science and engineering of firefighting, firefighting management, safety in firefighting, and firefighting operation strategies.
They were also exposed to a basic first aid course, computer skills basic course and a rescue course which included an airplane firefighting course held at the Airport Fire Service Development and Training Unit.
At the same time, the recruits also participated in various activities such as a blood donation campaign and religious classes, talks and workshops organised by various government agencies.
Penghulu of Mukim Berakas ‘B’ cum Legislative Council member YB Pengiran Haji Ali bin Pengiran Maon, Fire and Rescue Director Lt Col (Rtd) Yahya bin Haji Abdul Rahman, Fire and Rescue Training Centre Assistant Superintendent Ajahrin bin Ismail in his capacity as Acting Commandant of the Fire and Rescue Training Centre, department heads, senior government officials and other invited guests attended the ceremony yesterday.
