RADIO Brunei should constantly review its services and content to reach out more effectively to all walks of society, said Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hamdan bin Haji Abu Bakar, Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, during a ceremony held yesterday at Radio Television Brunei (RTB)’s Dewan Raya, marking 60 years of broadcasting services in the country.

Radio Brunei’s first official broadcast to the public was at 7.45pm on May 2, 1957, which lasted for only two hours and 45 minutes, owing to the fact that there was only one studio at the time.

In his speech at the Diamond Jubilee ceremony, the deputy minister also urged Radio Brunei to keep abreast of current developments in info-communication technology (ICT) to maintain its appeal among local audiences, particularly youths.

“Radio Brunei needs to be competent in the face of all challenges and expectations,” he said.

Earlier, Haji Muhammad Suffian bin Haji Bungsu, Director of RTB, said that his organisation is well aware of the importance in creating a more competitive and viable public broadcasting service, which could have a lasting positive impact on local audiences.

He also cited a survey conducted from November 7 to December 20, 2016, which showed an increase of 85 per cent in listening figures, compared to 71 per cent in 2015.

“This is an indication that RTB should continually strive to improve its programmes, for a more informed and knowledgeable community,” he said.

The state radio’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations were launched with a stage performance of ‘Sketsa Bujang Si Gandam’, a popular programme in the 1960s and 1970s.

Later, Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hamdan signed the 60th Diamond Jubilee Plaque and toured the ‘Six Decades of Radio Brunei’ exhibition at Studio A, which is now known as Studio Al-Ansar, while Studio B has been renamed Studio Bilhuda.
