THE Ministry of Education, Department of Schools and CfBT Education Services have successfully launched a joint initiative designed to raise exam results in International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) English as a Second Language.
Designed using the guiding principles behind the SCOPE (Success in Cambridge O Level Public Examinations) programme – which contributed to dramatic improvements in the national ‘O’ Level results – the goal of the IGCSE AdVantage Programme is to help students currently achieving a grade D in IGCSE ESL to move up to a Grade C.
The IGCSE AdVantage Programme was launched via a series of interactive student roadshows held at host-schools throughout Brunei.
Over 400 Year 11 IGCSE ESL students attended roadshow sessions on May 3 and 4, designed to provide activities to improve reading, writing, listening and speaking skills necessary for successful performance in the external examination.
Roadshow sessions were conducted by a team of 14 CfBT presenters and each student attending received a folder containing a set of resources for at-home study.
Students participating in the intervention programme will continue to be supported when they return to their school through weekly meetings with an IGCSE In-school Coordinator.
The initial phase of the programme, called Gaining the AdVantage, maps out six weeks of at-home study sessions.
Once these have been completed, students will attend a follow-up roadshow to receive further input from the roadshow presenters and another set of IGCSE AdVantage Programme self-study materials.
