THE warmth and friendliness of the Brunei people as well as its pristine rainforests captured the hearts of three Nepalese cyclists who were in the country for a week-long cycling tour. The trio are on a world cycling tour to spread the message of world peace and environment protection.

Before leaving Brunei, Anish Dhakal, one of the three cyclists said in an interview: “It was quite a memorable tour in Brunei. Cycling through green forests and experiencing a peaceful country, talking about and sharing our experiences and aims (of the world tour) with the people here is really amazing.”

Dhakal recalled the warmth of the Brunei people when recounting the time riding with compatriots Dilip Chhetri and Nirmal Baral from the Brunei-Muara district to Kuala Belait during the trio’s stay in the country.

“In our second day in Brunei, we received drinks and water from the locals. We were also offered free food from a number of restaurants in Bandar Seri Begawan after they knew that we were cycling for a noble cause,” Dhakal said. “We started our journey from the capital at 12 noon.

During our journey down to Kuala Belait, people were stopping our bikes to take pictures with us. The people here really seem to respect cyclists, usually stopping cars to give way to them. Traffic is also well-managed and this is the most beautiful country to ride in.”

He also mentioned fondly of the time “we encountered problems with our bikes and were forced to stop in Tutong, and an old cyclist offered us water and gave us some spare tubes to change” during their journey down from Bandar to Seria.

“We were also invited to his house to set up our tent for a good rest,” he added.

He said that during their time in Seria, they “were accommodated by our Nepalese friends Jiwan Bishokarma and Santosh Baraily”.

Dhakal concluded by reiterating his admiration for the sultanate: “Brunei is a beautiful country with lots of green forests. It is certainly the most peaceful country, with kind people.”
