THE Community Development Department (JAPEM) hosted a thanksgiving prayer and Tahlil ceremony yesterday, as a sign of gratitude for those involved in the successful restoration of a house belonging to two orphaned siblings in Kampong Kapok, Muara.

The house was owned by Haji Azalani bin Haji Sulaiman and Norita binti Laisah, who were both involved in a fatal road accident in 2007.

Currently, their daughters – 14-year-old Nur Hanisah Batrisyia and 12-year-old Nur Faizah Batrisyia – live there with their widowed aunt, Azizah binti Haji Sulaiman, and her four children.

Last November, the house was partly destroyed in a fire, but has since been restored, thanks to the collaborative efforts of JAPEM with the Brunei Council on Social Welfare (MKM) and several generous donors.

The guest of honour, Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, presented a Housing Relief certificate to Nur Hanisah Batrisyia, along with some gifts and donations.

In an interview with the Bulletin, Nur Hanisah Batrisyia expressed her gratitude to the Brunei Government for its assistance, as well as all to those involved in the restoration of her parents’ house.

The Village Head of Kampong Kapok, Haji Marali bin Haji Ahmad, said, “Through the Kampong Kapok Village Consultative Council, we are able to provide support to our village residents, particularly elderly people and orphaned children.”

Haji Marali also said that the two sisters are receiving monthly assistance from JAPEM, amounting to $530.

Also present were YB Pengiran Haji Mohamed bin Pengiran Haji Osman @ Othman, a member of Legislative Council (LegCo) and the Village Head of Kampong Masjid Lama, Pekan Muara, Sabun and Pelumpong; Haji Noor Jusmin bin Haji Abdul Samad, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports; Haji Mohd Sunaidi bin Haji Buntar, the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs; Misle bin Haji Abdul Karim, the Acting Brunei-Muara District Officer; and Major (Rtd) Haji Johari bin Haji Abdul Razak, the Penghulu of Mukim Serasa.
