THREE new books – ‘Perahu Jumpong, Perahu Bidar’, ‘Derita Di Pangkal Jalan’ and ‘Sumbangsih II Cerita Rakyat’ – by local writer Haji Mohsin bin Abu Bakar, under the pen name of H Mohab or MB Kelana, were launched yesterday during a ceremony at the Jeruton Hotel in Kampong Jerudong.
Present as the guest of honour at the book launching was Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Awang Haji Mohammad bin Haji Daud.
The ceremony began with the recitation of the Surah Al-Fatihah, which was then followed by a recitation of selected verses from the Al-Quran, and a poetry reading.
Haji Mohsin gave a speech as chairman of the event, expressing his gratitude to the guest of honour and attendees for the grand atmosphere at the ceremony.
“‘Perahu Jumpong, Perahu Bidar’ was especially written for the community of Kampong Lorong Dalam, which is now divided, with everyone going their separate ways,” he said. “‘Derita Di Pangkal Jalan’ is an inspirational book meant for general reading, while ‘Sumbangsih II Cerita Rakyat’ comprises two stories set during the era of the British Residency in Brunei.”
Haji Mohsin then added his views on why Brunei writers differ from their counterparts on the international scene, whose notability is determined by the population size of their respective countries.
“International writers are able make a living from their large fanbase, while Bruneian writers turn to writing as a hobby, not for their income,” he said.
