ONE thousand runners yesterday turned up at the Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien for the Firefighter Walk Run Cycle 2017, with some hailing from as far away as Mexico, and the youngest being a five-year-old.
Minister of Home Affairs cum guest of honour Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong flagged off the race in the presence of Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohammad Yusof, Deputy Permanent Secretaries at the MoHA Haji Idris bin Haji Mohd Ali and Haji Mohammad Sunadi bin Haji Buntar, Fire and Rescue Director Lt Col (Rtd) Yahya bin Haji Abdul Rahman and other officials.
The Firefighter Walk Run Cycle 2017, an event collaboration between Heroes Event Management and the Fire and Rescue Department, was held following the success of the first run in 2016.
The charity event hoped to raise money for the Firefighter Welfare Fund to support the local firefighters’ social activities and welfare. This run saw $8,008 raised.
Firefighters from Miri, Sarawak and Johor, Malaysia joined local runners in the charity event, while the other participants hailed from Bulgaria, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, France, Colombia, Lithuania, Morocco, Taiwan, Portugal, the United States, Singapore, Australia, India, Mexico and the United Kingdom.
The event was split into 12km male/female competition, 12km cycling expedition, 5km fun run and 3km fun run.
Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar rode alongside other cyclists in the 12km ride.
Aside from the main event, an exhibition was set up by various units under the Fire and Rescue Department, while other activities included the Strong Man/Woman competition requiring participants to pull the LP 8,000kg fire engine across a 30-metre distance, the fastest to suit-up in firefighting gear challenge and a colouring contest for kids.
