A GROWING number of youth are learning the trade of becoming good basketball players at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) Academy for beginners under four, 12 and 16 years.
On Sunday, more than 30 kids took part in the programme’s fun sessions from 11am to 12.30pm.
Conducted by BBA volunteer coaches, youth interested in honing their basketball skills are encouraged to join the academy.
Alan Bong, who enrolled his four-year- old to academy, said, “It is a fun way to learn about basketball … and it is a place where my son is also able to make new friends.
“This is a good setup for a basketball boot camp. BBA has many capable volunteer coaches to help and share experience with young players.”
For youth players with intermediate skills, the academy is organising two basketball sessions – Thursday from 7pm to 10pm and Sunday from 1pm to 4pm.
There is a nominal fee of $3 per session for members and $5 for non-members.
All fees collected go towards the maintenance of the court and development of basketball in Brunei.
Lim Fung, Secretary of BBA, said, “We want to use basketball as a platform to teach our youth the value of discipline, positive attitude, respect and etiquette.
“We want the children to acquire not just basketball skills but also learn the values of teamwork, leadership and communication skills, all of which are essential for their futures.”
