THE Forestry Department and 17 secondary schools in Brunei Darussalam planted about 200 trees at Berakas Forest Reserve, yesterday.
The event, in line with ‘The Green Wave’ project, was organised in conjunction with the International Day for Biological Diversity.
This was the 7th year Brunei Darussalam has participated in the project.
The project supports the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity, the world’s international treaty that promotes the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits derived from genetic resources.
It aims to raise awareness and educate young people – tomorrow’s leaders and citizens – on the loss of biodiversity that’s taking place across the world and the need to take action to preserve life on Earth.
In celebrating The Green Wave initiative, each year, children and youths in participating schools, government and private sectors, NGOs around the world will plant a tree at 10am local time from May 22-23, creating a “green wave” across time zones.
Participants will upload photos and text about their celebration to The Green Wave website to share their stories with others.
