THE holy month of Ramadhan is the time for the Muslim Ummah to show unity and come to the aid of those who need assistance.

During Ramadhan, the prospect of giving charity is heightened immensely as people tend to donate more generously during this month of blessings.

The reward for every good deed done during this month is multiplied manifold, which is why Muslims donate their Zakat (tithe) graciously to play their part in strengthening the Muslim Ummah.

Bruneians are known for their charitable activities and never miss any opportunity to help lessen the burden of the financially weaker individuals in the community to jointly share the joy of the upcoming Hari Raya festivities.

The national level donation for orphans will take place today at the International Convention Centre in Berakas and the ceremony will also see presentation of prizes to orphaned students who have excelled in studies.

The distribution of basic food necessities for eligible poor and destitutes (Fakir and Miskin) in the Brunei-Muara, Tutong and Belait districts will also be held today.p01-1_20170601

In addition, an established auto company will donate hampers to single parents. Representatives of the company will visit their houses today and again on June 5 for the distribution.

Another firm will donate water and dates at Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque in Pekan Tutong today.

According to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, for the upcoming Hari Raya, some 8,299 less fortunate individuals (Fakir and Miskin category of Zakat Fitrah recipients) comprising 2,794 heads of families and 5,505 dependents will receive tithe money.

Each head of family will receive $100 and each dependent $50 from Zakat Fitrah. Additionally, the head of family will get $500 and dependent $300 from Zakat Harta (property tithe). This means each head of family will get a total of $600 and dependents $350 each as tithe money.

Meanwhile, the Zakat assistance will also be provided to 3,507 Muslim converts, of whom 2,924 are heads of families while 583 are dependents. Each head of family will receive $50 from Zakat Fitrah and $500 from property tithe, while it will be $50 and $350 respectively for each dependent.

Apart from these, tithe money distributed before the start of the new school term every year, will also benefit the less-privileged in the society.
