A TOTAL of 17 orphans, who are the children of staff members at the Ministry of Education, received donations yesterday from the ministry’s Community Service under the Co-Curriculum Education Department and Uniform Unit.

The guest of honour was Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, the Minister of Education, who presented each of the orphans with $200 in cash and a gift hamper.

The donated items and cash were derived from funds contributed by all departments under the ministry for its ‘Fastabiqul Khairat’ project.

Haji Azis bin Haji Nayan, the Director of Co-Curriculum Education, said in a speech that the ‘Fastabiqul Khairat’ project took off on March 6, with a blood donation drive that successfully collected 50 pints of blood.

“It was then followed with a donation of food items, which was carried out from March 6 to June 3,” he said.

“Four collection centres were provided for the purpose, including the Co-Curriculum Education Department as the main headquarters, and the department’s other branches in Tutong, Belait and Temburong districts.

“The contributions show that the Ministry of Education, as well as members of the public, are working together in caring for the welfare of those in need,” he added.

Yesterday’s event also witnessed a handover of donated gifts from the ‘Fastabiqul Khairat’ project to appointed district representatives, who will then distribute them to several orphans at a number of schools.
