THE Universiti Brunei Basketball (UBD) Team will compete in the PolyU 80th Anniversary PolyU King’s Flair Group Asian Universities Invitational Basketball Tournament in Hong Kong from June 12-18.
Led by coach Lim Kok Shien, the players comprise Yee Xiao Hao, Koh Yong Hwang, Awangku Muhammad Ammar Syafiq bin Pengiran Ikram, Muhammad Masduqi bin Haji Hussin, Micky Lim Seng Wei, Teo Jyh Shiun, Clement Leong Ka Win, Teo Yeong Thung and Matthew Jerickson Vejerano.
Coach Lim kok Shien said, “From the profile that we saw, other teams are physically stronger compared to us. Hopefully we can have a good experience as basketball is not only physical but it’s about speed and strategies as well.”
UBD team member, Yee Xiao Hao commented, “We only had four training sessions together as we only confirmed our participation in the last minute and our target is to give our best and hopefully put on a good fight against the other universities.
“This is the first overseas match most of our players are participating in, but we’ll do our best.”
Touching on the inclusion of two Malay players, he said, “They have high potential and it’s a good platform to see how they can perform.”
The UBD team is placed in Group ‘A’ with Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Kyoto University and Nanyang Technology University.
University of Macau, Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Al-Farabi Kazakh University and South China University of Technology complete the Group ‘B’ listing.
The UBD team will face Kyoto University in its first match on June 13.
