REPRESENTATIVES from Brunei, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and Japan – consisting of Standard Chartered (SCB) staff as well as guests and associates – recently congregated in Kyoto, Japan for this year’s installation of ‘Ride for Sight’, a growing popular fund raising event initiated by staff of the bank to raise funds for Seeing is Believing.
According to a press release, the four-day bike challenge saw the cyclists cover a total of 546 kilometres with a total elevation gain of 8,190 metres.
The route began from Kyoto on April 19 and ended in Tokyo on April 22, taking the participants through one of the most scenic cycling routes in Japan.
Part of the route included cycling up Mount Fuji and around the Fuji Five Lakes including the town of Toba, a coastal port town famous for oysters and cultured pearls dating back to the Sengoku period.
The 20 strong team raised a total of USD66,000 for Seeing is Believing, the bank’s flagship global initiative to tackle avoidable blindness and visual impairment.
The three representatives from Brunei participated in the Ride for Sight: Kyoto to Tokyo challenge as guests of Standard Chartered Brunei were Edmund Teo, Philip Chieng and Lance Lau. Together, the team raised a total of USD7,800 towards the cause.
Philip Chieng said, “I truly enjoyed the experience, being able to enjoy the beautiful scenic ride while making new friends from around the region. Most importantly, I enjoyed raising funds for a cause that I feel passionate about. I had heard about Ride for Sight from a friend of Standard Chartered Bank and it intrigued me that I could integrate my personal interests through such an experience.”
Ride for Sight, organised by staff at Standard Chartered Bank in the Asean region, and has been conducted in Singapore, Malaysia, Phuket, Vietnam and now in Japan.
Ride for Sight Japan was the most diverse challenge to date, with participants from nine different nationalities across the bank’s offices in Asia.
It was the most challenging tour with a distance of more than 500 kilometres with the highest elevation gain.
All the expenses of the ride were borne entirely by the participants.
