THE Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Haji Idris bin Haji Ali yesterday officiated a One Village, One Product (1K1P) and handicraft exhibition organised by the Department of Prisons, at The Airport Mall in Berakas.
Showcasing the workmanship of prison inmates, as well as local village produce, the event was the latest in a series of activities held this year to mark the Department of Prisons’ 62nd anniversary.
In his welcoming speech, Haji Ismail bin Haji Murat, Acting Director of Prisons, said that the exhibition was part of a support and rehabilitation programme for prison inmates.
He went on to say that moral support and cooperation was essential for the inmates’ reintegration into society, which would help them to become important assets to their families, communities and also to the country.
The prisons handicraft exhibition saw the joint participation of Jerudong, Maraburong and the Women’s Prisons, together with booths allocated to the Miri Prisons Centre and the Limbang Prison, in a display of the concerted rehabilitation efforts between Brunei and Sarawak.
Household accessories such as ironing boards, coffee tables, rihals (Al-Quran book stands), multipurpose tables and Islamic wood art were among the items available for purchase at the booths managed by the Department of Prisons.
Maraburong Prison offered everyday items such as barbecue stands and a clotheshorse at its booths, while the Women’s Prison displayed hijabs and songkoks among their handiwork.
Meanwhile, a total of 24 booths were assigned to mukims and villages under the 1K1P scheme, for the promotion of locally made snacks and woodcraft designs.
Several activities were held during the exhibition, including a blood donation drive and a noodle cooking competition.
