THE Curriculum Development Department under the Ministry of Education is embarking on a pilot project to redesign the current Year 1 curriculum to five subjects to provide a better improved and integrated learning experience for students.
The pilot project will start in January next year at selected primary schools across the country.
Curriculum Development Department Director Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Nawi revealed this in brief in a speech at the recent launch of the ‘Magic Moments…. in the Preschool English Classroom’, a collaborative effort between the Curriculum Development Department, the Centre for British Teachers (CfBT) Education Services (B) Private Limited.
He said, “The five subjects would be Literacy – Malay and English, Numeracy – Mathematics, Islamic Religious Knowledge and Physical Education.”
Through the pilot project, he said, “We are designing a new curriculum for Year 1, which is more integrated, gearing towards better results than the existing curriculum approach where there are nine subjects altogether.”
Teachers of the selected schools “will be on intensive training and professional development in the coming months to be prepared for the pilot project,” he added.
