THE Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Brunei Darussalam held a reception to mark the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) at The Rizqun International Hotel last night.
Over 200 guests comprising officials from the Ministry of Defence, Royal Brunei Armed Forces, Royal Brunei Police Force and various government departments as well as foreign envoys and defence attachés from diplomatic missions, representatives from the overseas Chinese community and Chinese institutions in Brunei attended the event.
Present as the guest of honour was Deputy Minister of Defence, First Admiral (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Abdul Aziz bin Haji Mohd Tamit and spouse.
The Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Paduka Seri Mohd Tawih bin Abdullah; the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Brunei Darussalam, Yang Jian; Defence Attaché of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Brunei Darussalam, Senior Colonel We Geng; foreign envoys; and special guests were also present.
According to Senior Colonel We Geng, the PLA has become a world-famous formidable, civilised and peaceful military force and has undergone comprehensive reform for the last 90 years.
“PLA has made indelible historical contributions to the Chinese People’s liberation, soc-ialist construction and reform, protecting national sovereignty, security and development interests, maintaining world peace and promoting human progress,” he said.
The senior colonel also lauded the military-to-military contacts between the two nations that achieved remarkable and fruitful results.
This is a result from exchange of visits, personnel training and multilateral military exercise that helped the two sides strengthen ties.
He expressed confidence that that the bilateral defence corporations and pragmatic exchanges will be further enhanced in the future.
The event also saw the customary cutting of the 90th anniversary cake for the founding of PLA led by the guest of honour together with special guests.
