DPMM FC’s defeat record in the Great Eastern-Hyundai S League this season reached double digits after losing to Geylang International FC 1-0 at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium last night.
Geylang forward Shahfiq Ghani came off the bench to net the winner in the 81st minute after Daud Gazale had earlier missed a penalty for the hosts in the 63rd minute.
The Brunei-based outfit’s search for a league win since April 2 continued after falling to an eighth defeat in nine matches.
The visitors conjured an opportunity after midfielder Ricando Sendra lashed a good drive in the near post which Mu’izzuddin Ismail did well to keep out.
Gabriel Quak had a goal chalked off for offside with the area congested by players from both sides.
The hosts applied pressure as Nor Azli Yusoff saw his short pass for the goalkeeper Syazwan Buhari gone astray and out for an unnneccesary corner.
DPMM FC came close to opening the deadlock but Adi Said scuffed his shot wide after the restart.
Nor Azli was replaced by Myanmar’s Min Thi Ha in the 50th minute for the first change of the game.
The Gegar Gegar men were awarded a penalty after defender Yuki Ichikawa was adjudged to have handled in the box but DPMM FC forward Daud Gazale, who was looking to open his account, missed the golden opportunity.
Min Thi Ha, was in the pitch for 16 minutes, had to be withdrawn after suffering an injury and his replacement Shahfiq Ghani went on to make a difference.
Azwan Ali also squandered a chance to put his team in front after his header flew harmlessly wide.
Geylang’s defender Faritz Abdul Hameed sprinted for all of 30 yards before sending a cross for Shahfiq, who was not contested in an aerial battle to place his header into the back of the net.
Steve Kean made two late substitutions at the end of normal time with Maududi Hilmi Kasmi taking Gazale’s place and Khairul Anwar making a cameo appearance in place of Azwan Ali.
DPMM FC remain in eighth place with four points with a game in hand over Balestier Khalsa while Geylang leapfrogged Hougang United to fifth place with 21 points.
