ARTWORKS by four young artists from Brunei Darussalam will be among those featured at an international art exhibition organised in Seoul, South Korea, starting today.
The Asean Art Exhibition will display artworks of young artists from the 10 Asean member states, including Brunei, until August 20, 2017 at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in the Korean capital, the Asean-Korea Centre announced in a press statement yesterday.
Held in conjunction with the 2017 Asian Students and Young Artists Art Festival (ASYAAF 2017), the exhibition will feature over 60 diverse artworks, ranging from oil paintings to installation art, by 30 young artists.
Creative Space Art Gallery & Studio in Brunei Darussalam announced yesterday that it recently aided in sending the works of four local artists – Lizan Linggat, Umi Zaty Zakariah, Wilson MC Lau and Maziyah Yussof – to be exhibited at the Seoul event.
The opening ceremony of the exhibition will be held today, where Kim Young-sun, Secretary-General of the Asean-Korea Centre, Long Dimanche, Ambassador of Cambodia to South Korea and Chair of the Asean Committee in Seoul as well as diplomats from Asean embassies are expected to attend.
“Marking the Asean-ROK Cultural Exchange Year and 50th anniversary of Asean, the Asean-Korea Centre is organising this exhibition for the first time with an aim to introduce remarkable artworks by young Asean artists and promote the exchange among Asean and Korean artists,” Kim Young-sun was quoted as saying in the statement.
“I hope this exhibition will not only be a stepping stone for promising Asean artists but also a good chance for the Korean public to see their potential and purchase quality artworks,” added the secretary-general.
The organisers have invited one artist from each Asean member country to Seoul to personally promote their artworks through ‘Conversation with Artists’, and view other artworks from Asian countries participating in the ASYAAF.
The Bruneian artist attending is Umi Zaty Zakariah, who departed from Brunei for Seoul on Sunday evening. The invited artists will meet Korean artists and experience Korean arts and culture.
They will take part in the Asean-Korea Art Forum, visit the Seoul National University (SNU) Museum of Art and enjoy a networking session with SNU art students, and take a tour of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) and other nearby galleries.
Renowned figures from the Korean art circle such as Suh Jin-suk, Director of Nam June Paik Art Centre and Chung Hyung-min, Professor from College of Fine Arts of Seoul National University are expected to attend the Asean-Korea Art Forum, which will take place today at Moogaewon, a Korean traditional cultural facility in Seoul. At the forum, the Asean artists will have an in-depth discussion on the topics of local art trends, measures to support young artists, and area for future cooperation between Asean and Korea.
According to information from Creative Space Art Gallery & Studio, ASYAAF 2017 is an annual art festival organised by Chosun-Ilbo, one of the most influential media companies in Korea, with joint effort from Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
ASYAAF annually receives over 3.000 applications and showcases about 500 young artists, carefully selected by esteemed judges, during the span of one month.
It provides emerging artists with a chance to meet general spectators and important figures from the art world as well as a foothold to materialise their dreams.
“In the meantime, by providing a chance to purchase quality artworks at an affordable price, it allows general spectators to know that artworks are not exclusive properties of a privileged few, but can be enjoyed and collected by anyone,” Creative Space said in the statement.
“More than 280,000 spectators have visited over the last nine exhibitions and approximately 6,300 pieces of works were sold,” it noted.
“ASYAAF is an excellent opportunity to present Bruneian works to a broad audience and to expand collector base in Korea and beyond.
“Creative Space Art Gallery & Studio actively participates in facilitating such projects to create awareness to the public of the available opportunities both locally and internationally,” the statement added.
