THAILAND’S Minister of Education Dr Teerakiat Jareonsettasin has lauded Brunei’s education system which he described as employment-oriented and founded on a strong economic philosophy.
“We can learn a lot from Brunei as this small country has one of the best education systems in the region,” he told the Bangkok media after his meeting with Brunei’s Minister of Education Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman during the 49th Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation (SEAMEO) Council Conference in Jakarta, Indonesia on Monday.
He noted that Thailand and Brunei have developed a bilateral cooperation programme through which they aim at learning from each other to improve the education systems in both countries.
This is a vivid example of the strong partnership among SEAMEO member countries, Dr Teerakiat added.
“Thailand’s Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has great admiration for Brunei’s education policy and the Brunei Government is also very keen on working with Thailand. Therefore, Thai delegates at the SEAMEO meeting held a special meeting with their Brunei counterparts to discuss future cooperation,” he said.
Dr Teerakiat explained that the strength of Brunei’s education system is that it offers several pathways for students to develop after they complete primary school education.
“These are based on their study outcome, personal interests and skills. For instance, an academically talented student can choose to study further at university, while students with other skills can pursue vocational education.
“Another interesting thing that we can learn from Brunei is that they have a few very effective key performance indicators to measure educational success such as the employment rate of graduates and the satisfaction of employers,” the Thai minister noted.
Highlighting the bilateral dev-elopment programme, he said, “The cooperation between Brunei and Thailand will see mutual experience sharing which will benefit both countries in improving their education systems.”
