THE Brunei History Centre will be hosting a seminar on the study of Borneo manuscripts, under the theme ‘Melestari Warisan Bangsa’ (Preserving Our Cultural Traditions), on August 28-29.
The two-day seminar is a continuation of the 3rd Borneo History Seminar held in 2013.
At a press conference at the Brunei History Centre yesterday, Pengiran Hajah Mahani binti Pengiran Haji Ahmad, a Senior History Officer and the deputy chairperson of the seminar, said that they will be presenting the history of Brunei’s cultural traditions in the areas of religion, politics, economy, society and archaeological findings in relation to the history of the island of Borneo.
The seminar will also delve into the history of past Sultans, to be used as examples and role models for present and future generations.
“It will provide the general public with more exposure to the role and contributions of the monarchial institution towards prosperity, social wealth, religion and country,” said Pengiran Hajah Mahani, adding, “We also aim to improve on current research for old Malay manuscripts as reference and reading materials.”
More than 300 people – including those from schools, colleges and institutions of higher learning – are expected to attend the event, with 65 academic and history researchers from Brunei Darussalam, the United Kingdom, East Malaysia and Indonesian Borneo invited to present working papers.
The seminar also forms part of the Brunei History Centre’s ongoing efforts to establish the Borneo Research Centre (penBorneo) in Anggerek Desa, as a main hub of reference and research on Borneo history.
