GLENEAGLES JPMC has set another milestone with the first-ever live telecast of advanced medical procedures from Brunei to the 14th MYLIVE 2017 in Kuala Lumpur – an international conference of cardiology specialists from all over Asia and beyond, organised by the Interventional Cardiovascular Society of Malaysia (ICSM).
The event highlighted the state of the advanced cardiac care currently available in the Sultanate.
During the live telecast last Thursday, Gleneagles JPMC transmitted two coronary angioplasty procedures. In recent years, MYLIVE has grown remarkably to attract cardiology specialists from across the globe and this year’s edition showcases updates and best practices in cardiac and other vascular intervention.
This is the first time live medical procedures were transmitted from Brunei to an international conference.
Gleneagles JPMC Brunei has been providing tertiary cardiac and cardiothoracic care for Brunei for the past 15 years. At its two state-of-the-art cardiac cath labs, patients are able to undergo advanced cardiac procedures such as complex angioplasty, device implantation, electrophysiology studies and ablation as well as structural intervention.
This live transmission included two cases of complex angioplasty. They were performed by Dr Sofian Johar and Dr Rajinikanth Rajagopal. The procedures highlighted the use of advanced techniques such as FFR (Fractional Flow Reserve – measuring blood flow pressures inside the artery in the heart) and OCT (Optical CT – seeing inside the heart artery using CT) to perform precise angioplasty and stent placement.
As part of the interventional cardiology fraternity, the specialists at Gleneagles JPMC work closely with their colleagues in the region, exchanging ideas, and the live telecast from Brunei will be a further step in promoting this cooperation.
In a press conference after the medical procedures, Dr Rajinikanth Rajagopal explained that the event showcased a very advanced cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery setup as well as the facilities and expertise at Gleneagles JPMC.
Dr Sofian Johar said Gleneagles JPMC hopes to be on par with the best in the world and thanked the team for the success of the procedures. He said Gleneagles JPMC hopes the event will be the beginning of more collaboration in the future.
“We will certainly be showcasing these activities during the Asean Federation of Cardiology Congress (AFCC) 2017 to be held in Brunei in November,” he said.
Dr Peter Tay, Chief Executive Officer of Gleneagles JPMC, said that the event is a milestone for Gleneagles JPMC. “This is the first time we have done live transmission of a case to an international conference, which will surely give a lot of credit to our heart centre here in Brunei, and I think this will raise our profile immensely.”
Dr Sofian added, “The event ensures that our standard of care is comparable to our Asian colleagues and on par with the very best that this region has to offer. It makes sure that patients in Brunei certainly get better than or at least equal to the care in neighbouring countries such as Singapore and Malaysia.”
Dr Rajinikanth Rajagopal stated, “The event is part of the ongoing cooperation with countries like Malaysia and Singapore. We frequently have experts from these countries coming and helping us do new procedures. Similarly, we also travel to Malaysia, Singapore and other Asean member countries as faculties to take part in discussions and conferences. This helps us stay up-to-date by working together.”
Also present at the press conference was Dr Eugene Sim, Chief and Head of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery.
