THE Lela Cheteria team took third place in the finals of the International Premier Open 12-crew category at the recent Langkawi International Dragon Boat Regatta 2017.
The team clocked its best time of 52.71 seconds, while covering a distance of 1,500 metres, at the Resort World Langkawi in Malaysia.
First place went to the Hong Kong University Dragon Boat Team, with a time of 51.57 seconds, while the Penang Forward ‘A’ team, finished second at 51.72 seconds.
Another boat race team from Brunei – Seri Pahlawan Brunei Muara – placed fourth with a time of 53.71 seconds, while the Typhoons Dragon Boat Club and the PMPRC Dragon ‘A’ team finished fifth and sixth respectively.
Members of the Lela Cheteria team were welcomed on arrival at the Brunei International Airport yesterday by Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Aziz bin Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar, the Chief of Adat Istiadat Negara and patron of the dragon boat team.
The team also took part in the International Premier Women (12 Crew), the International Premier Open (22 Crew), and the International Premier Mixed (12 Crew).
Teams from Australia, Canada, Russia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia and other countries also participated in the weekend tournament.
The Lela Cheteria team was established in 2013, and has participated in racing competitions held both locally and abroad, including the 3rd Sabah FCAS International Dragon Boat Race held last year at Likas Bay, Kota Kinabalu. During the tournament, the team won the 800 metres mixed team (20 paddlers) category, clocking in at 3:38.90.
