BRUNEI recently hosted the 4th PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC), the first ever with all Bruneian national candidates.
Six candidates partook in written exams, confined and open water evaluations from July 29 – August 8, conducted by Arnold Yapp, PADI Course Director from Malaysia.
Also attending as IDC instructors were Brandon Sing, PADI Course Examiner; Roger Sim; and Maclean Torres, Branch Manager of Poni Divers.
The PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) is a step every PADI instructor has to go through to sit for the PADI Instructor Exams. During the IDC, participants are taught how to conduct and teach PADI programmes to burgeoning divers. To date, Poni Divers has successfully certified 18 participants and qualified them through this programme.
The course and confined water evaluations were held at Jerudong Park Medical Centre and the written exams at Parkview Hotel. To complete in the open water presentation yesterday, participants travelled by speedboat to Pelong Rock Island which was a 20-minute boat ride from Poni Divers Serasa. Pelong Rock is well known for its reef diving as well as snorkelling, offering varied coral and marine life.
Kassim Mohammad, one of the participants, was overwhelmed by the support of PADI and Poni Divers for making his dream a reality. “I’m really happy that Poni Divers gave me the opportunity to attend IDC. I am probably the first person from Temburong.”
Also a huge achievement for the Brunei dive community was Aminah Kaharuddin, who is the first female Malay national certified as PADI Instructor in Brunei.
With 4,500 hectares of coral reef coastline, over 410 coral species and 700 species of reef fish, Brunei is an oasis for diving.
From wreck diving to oil rig dives and a vast and varied array of hard and soft corals, Brunei has something to enthral every diver.
