HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, in his capacity as the Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) yesterday consented to visit the 29th UBD Convocation Exhibition at UBD Chancellor’s Hall.
Also present were His Royal Highness Prince (Dr) Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, and Pro-Chancellor of UBD.
This year’s exhibition featured exhibits showcasing UBD’s innovative and blended teaching methods, which emphasise on lifelong learning and entrepreneurship, embracing UBD’s progressive steps towards meeting the needs and demands of the local and international student population.
The exhibition highlights the institution’s educational achievements and future goals based on three initiatives: The Global Classroom, Centre for Lifelong Learning (C3L) Programmes, and Entrepreneurship Education.
The Global Classroom was established in 2012 at UBD’s Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah (PAPRSB) Institute of Health Sciences and offers simultaneous video-conferencing links with eight universities in Asia, including UBD itself, National University of Singapore, Seoul National University, National Taiwan University, United Nations University in Malaysia, Mahidol University in Thailand, and Japan’s University of Occupational and Environmental Health and Kagawa University.
With around 200 international participants and drawing experts from various fields in its partner universities, the Global Classroom programme allows for real-time participation, communication and roundtable discussions.
Dr Nik Anni Tuah from the PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences gave a demonstration of the Global Classroom in a lecture titled ‘Diabetes in Brunei Darussalam and Kagawa, Japan for students of the Masters in Public Health programme and PhD in Public Health’.
Her demonstration was a simulation of real-time interaction between UBD’s Dr Sharbini and Dr Akran Hossain from Kagawa University.
A second exhibition focussed on the latest programmes offered by the C3L in UBD.
Presented by Director of C3L, Dr Abdal-Hakim @ Glenn Hardaker and Deputy Director of C3L, Dr Annie Dayani binti Haji Ahad, the exhibition featured an online learning session demonstrating UBD’s innovative digital approach toward teaching and learning.
C3L uses a unique blended learning style that mixes traditional face-to-face teaching, giving students an engaging online learning experience.
In January, C3L offered 14 new short courses open to all members of the public regardless of background or experience, successfully enrolling over 200 students, while in August 2017, it launched the Master in Government course, a professional programme which focusses on the understanding of the workings and challenges of an Islam-driven system of government.
