LOCAL softball teams competed in a friendly reunion match at a softball field in G13, Lorong 7, Seria yesterday.
Participants included members from Team Kamikaze, Team Gregor, Team Knights, and Team Wasabi. Team Wasabi hailed from the Brunei-Muara District while the rest were from the Belait District. The participants were split into two teams.
The event aimed to strengthen ties among players and reignite the passion for playing softball.
Sheikh Haji Mohd Azmi, a former player and coach of Team Kamikaze, in an interview with the Bulletin said, “Back in the day, we formed teams with people we knew who had the passion to play softball.”
He added the team was one of the pioneers of softball in the Belait District, helping people play and gain the passion to play softball professionally.
“While we had not played as a team for a while now, some of the members continued to pursue their passion by playing for other teams,” he said. He added that some are playing for Brunei’s Softball National Team.
He emphasised the importance of having fun while playing softball; not only in Kamikaze, but all the teams that were at the match.
“Many of the members here play softball not only for fun, but also to enjoy the sport with like- minded people,” he said.
When asked on what the future holds for the softball teams, he said that while many of them have promising futures in their softball careers, he added that he is aware in teaching and coaching the future generation in softball.
“Some of those at the friendly match are family members who had taken a liking to watching and playing softball and I believe that it is our responsibility to nurture their passion and polish their skills so that one day they may consider a career in softball,” he said.
Currently, Team Kamikaze is attempting to reignite the passion of playing softball as well as acting as advisers for softball teams who wish to play in various friendly and competitive matches.
