OVER 200 species of birds indigenous to Brunei Darussalam were yesterday featured at the Bird Song and Style Competition held at the parking lot opposite Tudung Saji in Kuala Belait.

Organised by Shama King KB Team, the competition – which attracted dozens of curious onlookers and bird lovers – saw the participation of bird owners from the Belait District, Brunei-Muara District and from neighbouring countries.

The competition aimed to enliven the district, showcase the various species of birds found in Brunei, and at the same time, provide a platform for bird lovers to share their knowledge and experiences.

Speaking to the Bulletin, Shama King KB Team Chairman Mohd Yusof bin Abdul Rahman said, “Some of us love our birds, so to be able to organise such a competition where people with shared passion can get together to showcase the beauty of these creatures is an excellent opportunity for both Shama King KB Team and the participants.”

Held for the first time in the Belait District, the event was well received, he said, before adding the competition had previously been held in the Brunei-Muara District.

The competition was split into four categories: ‘Murai Batu Kepala Hitam,’ ‘Murai Batu Kepala Putih,’ ‘Murai Kampung’ and ‘Pleci Mata Putih.’

Four judges assessed the birds based on their singing ability and their performance style. The 20 winners of the Murai Batu Kepala Hitam and Kepala Putih categories as well as the 10 winners from the Murai Kampung and Pleci Mata Putih categories were awarded with cash prize, medals and certificates.

Miri participant Aloysius @ Eidul Shama of Kelab Pencinta Burung Kicau (Pekicau Miri) said he joined the competition to meet like-minded people and as a show of support for Shama King KB Team in organising such an event in the Belait District.

“We brought 27 bird species including the Murai Batu Kepala Hitam and Kepala Putih as well as Murai Kampung,” he said.

Meanwhile, the International Burung Kicau Song and Style Bird Competition is set to play out in Bandar Miri on November 5, an event Aloysius hopes will see the involvement of participants from various countries.
