FOUR students with special needs did Brunei proud after bagging two silver medals in the Global IT Challenge (GITC) for Youth with Disabilities in Hanoi, Vietnam recently.
Winning the Silver Medal in the eLive Map challenge for youths with autism was Umar Alfi bin Abdul Aziz, an Year 8 student at Lambak Kiri Secondary School. Among the participants with autism across the Asia-Pacific region, he was announced the runner-up in the eLiveMap challenge and was awarded the Excellence Challenger Award. Umar Alfi also received a certificate and US$300.
Meanwhile Brunei’s second silver came from Amir Haziq bin Hafiz Azizi under the eLive Map challenge for youths with visual impairment where he secured second place in his own special needs category and was awarded with the Excellence Challenger Award. He received a silver medal, a certificate and US$300.
Brunei was also represented by Emeily Nazrinah binti Fazly from Sufri Bolkiah Secondary School, Tutong and Muhammad Nazri bin Jaidin from Pengiran Isteri Hajah Mariam Secondary School, Serasa.
The four Bruneian students were selected by the Special Education Unit (SEU), Ministry of Education (MoE) based on their performances during the Local IT Challenge for students with special needs in June 2017.
Widiafalena binti Haji Surhan, the teacher who led the students in the trip said, “The Global IT Challenge is an excellent avenue for capacity building to develop skills and knowledge in the field of assistive technology for students and youths with disabilities. They were able to meet with other youths with different abilities from 16 different nations, exchange ideas, experiences and thoughts. They were also able to overcome their limitations, work collaboratively as a team and challenge themselves through the use of ICT.”
