DPMM FC head coach Steve Kean hoped that their 2-1 victory in their last league outing could be a springboard to lift their season ahead of a Great Eastern-Hyundai S League clash against Garena Young Lions at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium tonight.
The ‘Gegar Gegar’ men return to competitive action against the basement dwellers for the first time since notching their first league win since April 2 at the Hougang Stadium in Singapore.
Steve Kean’s charges could reduce the gap to within two points of seventh-placed Balestier Khalsa with a win ahead of the pair’s much-anticipated clash in over a week time at home.
The head coach said that the Cheetahs’ win has been long time coming and hoped to build a good run and finish the season strongly following solitary strikes from Adi Said and Daud Gazale ended the winless rot.
It has been a whirlwind season in what is arguably Kean’s toughest time in the DPMM FC hot-seat.
“There were other games this season when we played just as well or maybe even better but we’ve not managed to get results that our performances deserved. So I was delighted with the players because they stuck well with the details that were sent,” said Kean in a recent interview.
Kean was visibly pleased with his players during their game against Hougang and hoped for a same performance to get them over the line.
“We won battles all over the pitch. The midfield two was excellent and the back three never gave their front two anything in the second half apart from that one attack which resulted in a goal,” Kean said.
“Our front unit- Adi Said, Rafa and Daud- caused problems for the rivals all night so it’s good to get the win.
“We have to try to use that as a platform to get as many wins and take ourselves to a much more respectable position by the end of the season,” Kean asserted.
Kean also highlighted that they are in a false position in the S League table given the quality of players that they have in their arsenal.
Meanwhile, Kean’s opposite number Garena Young Lions head coach Vincent Subramaniam still maintained hopes in climbing up the table.
“We are not giving up for sure, there are still eight matches to go so there’s still a lot (for my players) to prove,” he told S League.
