FAR Eastern Air Transport Company of Taiwan has expressed its interest in carrying out direct flight services from Taiwan to Brunei Darussalam and vice versa.
The established Taiwanese airline – set up in 1957 – provides regular and chartered services for Taiwan domestic flights as well as for Asia and cross-strait China.
The airline has three MD-83s and five MD-82s made from McDonnell Douglas in the US.
Joseph Lee, President of Far Eastern Air Transport Company, during a visit by Bruneian media personnel to Taiwan highlighted the first step of supporting chartered flights.
“We need to first build the linkage between Taiwan and Brunei. Chartered flight is a good way to start. Direct flights, on the other hand, will need the contributions from both countries,” he said.
“We would need to test the market first to see if the flights are sustainable or not,” he added.
Meanwhile, Sherlyn Liu, Executive Director of Anthony Tour and Travel Agency in Brunei, said, “There were direct flights between Taiwan and Brunei before, but it stopped in 2004. To visit Taiwan now, Bruneians will need to transit through other countries which can be very inconvenient. A direct flight will only take around three hours.”
Last year, Far Eastern Air Transport Company was the best in term of safety with zero findings of unsafety record.
The airline is hoping to acquire bigger airplanes to expand its international as well as cross-straits routes.
