THE Golden Jubilee Celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Accession to the Throne is historic and will be remembered for many years to come, highlighting the glorious era of Brunei Darussalam during the reign of His Majesty.
This was stated by Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman in a special Friday sermon yesterday.
“And the historic event will not just be recalled but will be hailed as an example of great leadership through effective and successful implementation of the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) principle.
“Islam in modern times is also considered an effective governance system that brings goodness to the country and the people. His Majesty made it clear in the titah delivered last Thursday at the Balai Singgahsana Indera Buana of Istana Nurul Iman that the history of sovereign is also history of the people and the nation, because according to His Majesty, the ruler cannot break relations with the people and the nation.
“His Majesty asserted how the sovereign shares his history with the people and because of it, the monarch described the Golden Jubilee Celebration as a common property of the sovereign and the people,” the minister added.
Further quoting from the monarch’s titah, the minister said, “If I am happy, then the people are also entitled to rejoice. If the monarch is thankful, then the people should also be grateful. Thus in the relationship between the monarch and the people, there exist no barriers.
“The obligation of the ruler is to be fair to the people while the people’s obligation is to obey the ruler. The ruler is obliged to know people’s problem while the people are ordered to sympathise with the ruler.
“The reciprocity is for the wellbeing of all. The ruler and his people both hold this great trust which is the pillar of our lives in this country.
“It has successfully been in existence since 600 years ago. Let us take care of it and keep nurturing it in the years to come.”
Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin added, “An effective government is the one which can unite the people. Effective governance can uphold peace and stability that can meet the needs of the people and ensure a prosperous life.
“Especially for Brunei, effective administration is when the nation is holding the grip on Islam firmly. Over 600 years since accepting Islam, Brunei has been remaining as a monarchy in accordance with Islamic teachings.
“In this modern era of constitutional government, Islam is the official religion of the country. And with the policy and practices that always uphold the religion, Brunei is blessed by Allah the Almighty by ensuring peace for the country and happiness for the people.”
The sermon also touched on the Vision 2035, which envisages creation of a highly educated and skilled workforce with high quality of life as well as a sustainable economy.
“Whatever the development that the nation achieves, our children and grandchildren must unite and stick to three core matters – loyalty to the monarch and the nation; faith in Islamic values; and maintenance of social harmony and good ties. These are the principles the nation has inherited over the past 600 years.”
