A TOTAL of 548 students were honoured for their academic successes in the Excellent Students Awards Ceremony held yesterday at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas.

Present as the guest of honour was Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, the Minister of Education.

Also in attendance was Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, the Deputy Minister of Education; and Dr Ben Schmidt, the Southeast Asia and Pacific Regional Director at the Cambridge International Examination Education Management.

Zaman bin Haji Gapar, the Acting Director of Schools, said that the event was held in recognition of students who achieved excellent scores in their Primary School Assessment (PSR) Examination, BC-GCE ‘O’ and ‘A’ Level Examinations, Cambridge Outstanding Achievers Award and the Pearson BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate.

He also added that 67 per cent of primary school students across the country managed to score high grades in five subjects in last year’s PSR exams, which was a 3.05 per cent improvement from 2014.

“We managed to identify nine schools with 100 per cent accomplishments of A to C, while 72 schools showed some improvement compared to the previous year,” he said.

He cited statistics from the BC-GCE/IGCSE ‘O’ Level Examinations, in which 36.77 per cent of the candidates scored five to 13 credits, which showed an increase of 0.21 per cent to 14.53 per cent, compared to the results of the previous year.

Results from the GCE ‘A’ Level Examination also showed a vast improvement from 2014, in the number of students who scored grade A’s.

In view of the positive development, Zaman said that schools across the country are continuing to work on enhancing intellectual resources among educators, to provide effective teaching-and-learning experiences for students.

The event also witnessed the Deputy Minister of Education, presenting certificates to students who excelled in their PSR Examination and the Pearson BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate.

Later, there was a presentation of certificates and awards to outstanding students in the ‘O’ Level and ‘A’ Level Examinations – including the Cambridge Outstanding Achievers 2015 Award – by the Minister of Education and Dr Ben Schmidt.
