NATIONAL Football Association of Brunei Darussalam’s (NFABD) Technical Director Yvon Avry said plans are underway to revamp futsal in Brunei.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the FIFA Futsal Coaching Course at NFABD House recently, the Frenchman also said he wants to strengthen the country’s grassroots futsal programmes.

Conducted by FIFA Instructor Wai Chung Tsang from Hong Kong, 29 coaches are sitting for the course which ends on Friday and is being held for the second time in Brunei – with the first organised in 2015.

“There are some football coaches and national youth team coaches in this course, and for the next season, I want to introduce futsal in the syllabus of our national youth football programme,” said Avry.

“The federation needs to find new futsal coaches for the senior clubs and young players, and next year I plan to have both futsal and football (programmes) at the grassroots level for the young players to discover, practice and develop their skill and confidence on the ball.

“We need to develop futsal at the youth level and a pathway must exist between the grassroots and senior-level. It’s the responsibility of the clubs to develop these age groups, but also NFABD’s responsibility to propose some competitions, events and to develop coaches.

“In the near future, I am sure some meetings will be organised regarding this matter,” he added.

Avry was also pleased that Wai will be helping the national futsal team train for the 2017 Asean Football Federation (AFF) Futsal Championship which will be held in Vietnam from October 24 to November 3.

“We thank our instructor for this initiative and we wish that our national team will learn a lot from our instructor and will perform well in Vietnam,” he said.

Among those who attended the opening ceremony were NFABD Acting General Secretary Roslin Suhailee and other NFABD officials.
