TO CELEBRATE the cultural diversity of various nations, International School Brunei (ISB) yesterday organised its ‘International Day Celebration’ for the third consecutive year.
Some 50 countries were represented when the school held the event at its new campus in Sungai Hanching.
The celebration saw the participation of His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Wakeel and Her Royal Highness Princess Ameerah Wardatul Bolkiah, the children of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim and Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Anak Muneerah Madhul Bolkiah, the children of His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office were also present.
The highlight of the day was a whole school assembly in the multipurpose hall with a ‘Parade of Nations’, where representatives from each country present at ISB made a procession into the hall, to the cheers of the 1,000-strong audience.
Students, staff, parents and family members were invited to celebrate the day wearing the national dress of their nation, or a nation of their choosing.
The audience were seen donning Baju Melayu from Brunei, Kimono and Yukata from Japan, Ponchos and Sombrero’s from Mexico, Cheongju from Korea, Cheongsum from China, Lederhosen from Germany, Quilts from Scotland, Traditional Dayak costumes from Indonesia, and Sari from India, as well as North African Kaftans and West African Dashikis.
An array of festivities and activities were held throughout the fun-filled day. The school was decorated with brightly coloured flags from countries all over the world.
The day also saw various cultural performances by students representing the different year groups which include the New Zealand Haka and Maori song, traditional Malay dance, Filipino Candle dance, Bollywood singing and dancing, and a Hip Hop dance.
At the sidelines, more than 50 booths were set up as part of the ‘International Food and Fun Fair’ represented by the many nations.
The International Day Celebration is a festive event held every year to celebrate the diversity of cultures, nationalities, and languages of the school body.
Yesterday’s event was the 24th International Day Celebration in ISB’s 54 year history.
