THE Admiral Panteleev, an anti-submarine ship of the Russian Pacific Fleet, was yesterday opened to the public at Muara Port.

The ship is in the country on a goodwill visit under the Task Force of the Russian Pacific Fleet to Brunei Darussalam on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee Celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Accession to the Throne.

Speaking to the Bulletin, Rear Admiral Eduard E Mikhailov, Deputy Commander of the Primorskaya Flotilla of the All-Arms Forces of the Pacific Fleet, Russian Navy and Russian Military attaché Colonel Alexey V Ignashov shared that this is the Russian naval ship’s first visit to Brunei in the 25 years of bilateral cooperation between Brunei Darussalam and Russia.

The visit, which serves as an impetus to the further development of bilateral military cooperation between the two nations, was conceived by His Majesty and Russia President Vladimir Putin.

“We hope for the visit to establish interoperability, cooperation and mutual understanding between the armed forces of Russia and Brunei through the exchange of military exercises, including practical cooperation ties between both countries through professional exchanges, the Passage Exercise, sports interactions and navy exercises in manoeuvrability. One such activity would be a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) conducted with KDB Darulehsan,” said Rear Admiral Mikhailov.

“We also hope that through military cooperation between the two countries, Russia and Brunei could exchange military support as well as conduct exercises on issues pertaining to Southeast Asia – including sea piracy as well as providing support on natural disasters.”

“In conjunction with the Golden Jubilee, we also hope that Russia-Brunei relations will remain strong and to collaborate with one another in future endeavours in different fields – including the military and economic fields,” added the real admiral.

The Task Force of the Russian Pacific Fleet – comprising the large anti-submarine ships Admiral Vinogradov and Admiral Panteleev, as well as tanker Boris Butoma – is in Brunei until tomorrow.
