A ‘MOOT Court’ presentation was conducted yesterday at the International Convention Centre (ICC), by 16 students from the Faculty of Syariah and Law at Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA), demonstrating the procedures of actual court trials.
Nuradibah binti Ramlee, a fifth year student from the Faculty of Syariah and Law, in an interview said the proceedings are a simulation for law students who are taking Higher National Diploma (HND) in Syariah Criminal Certificate, as well as those taking Double Degrees in Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Syariah Law programmes, so that they will be familiar with court procedures once they graduate from university.
One of the simulations depicted a Syariah court case of a man suspected of drinking alcohol, which is an offence under Section 104 (1) of the Syariah Criminal Code Order.
“The presentation is to show both the students and members of the public that it isn’t easy to convict anyone in the Syariah Court without two valid witnesses,” said Nuradibah.
“The end of the simulation shows that the crime could not be proven, but as the accused did carry it out, he received only a fine.”
The presentation is also aimed at training UNISSA students to enhance their knowledge, skills and competence in carrying out research on the issues of Civil and Syariah laws, where their findings are submitted verbally in a discussion session at the Court of Appeal.
This is the second time such a presentation has been carried out as part of UNISSA’s Mahrajan Hafl Al-Takharruj, or convocation festival.
Throughout the convocation period, a number of forums, clinics, workshops and presentations will also be conducted.
