HIS Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, and Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall will arrive in Brunei today from Singapore, where they started their 11-day Asian tour to strengthen ties between Britain and Asian countries.
His Royal Highness Prince Charles is heir to the British throne and first visited the Sultanate in 1984 when he represented Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of Brunei’s independence.
He last visited Brunei Darussalam with his wife Her Royal Highness Camilla exactly nine years ago.
This visit comes less than a month after the Golden Jubilee Celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Accession to the Throne.
Their Royal Highnesses will have an opportunity to personally congratulate His Majesty on this achievement during an audience at the Istana Nurul Iman.
The royal couple will also meet with members of the British Forces Brunei and the Royal Gurkha Rifles together with their families and present a long service recognition award. According to a press statement from the British High Commission, Their Royal Highnesses will travel from Brunei for their first visit to Malaysia, after which they will go to India.
The British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam, Richard Lindsay said, “This visit from the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall is a very clear symbol of the enduring strength of the relationship between our two countries, and of the personal friendship between our monarchies.”
All of the countries on this tour are members of the Commonwealth.
The Prince of Wales will open the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia on April 4, 2018, and will also be supporting Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in hosting the Commonwealth Summit and Heads of Government Meeting in the United Kingdom from April 16, 2018.
