THE Deputy Minister of Defence, First Admiral (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Abdul Aziz bin Haji Mohd Tamit, shared his views on major global trends, including major power dynamics and the cooperative security architecture in the Asean region, in a keynote speech last Thursday, during the 10th East Asia Security Outlook (EASO) Seminar held at the Naval Training Centre of the Muara Naval Base.

The deputy minister also touched on non-traditional security challenges, including the evolving threats of terrorism and cyberspace defining the future global outlook.

He then underscored the achievements of Asean, which has brought peace and stability to the region during the 50 years of its establishment, as well as the Asean Defence Ministers’ Meeting framework which works in tandem with Asean to provide a platform for engagement and practical cooperation.

With these prevalent developments and opportunities to promote cooperation, this year’s topics revolved mainly around three main themes: East Asia’s Dynamics and Relations, Regional Security Environment and Cyber Security.

The panel included distinguished speakers from the Philippines’ Department of National Defense, Massey University of New Zealand, Chulalongkorn University of Thailand, the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore, University of New South Wales in Australia, and the Defence Cyber Organisation of Singapore.

Officers from the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and other ministries, as well as from the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF), were also invited to attend the seminar.

The event concluded with a presentation of tokens of appreciation to the speakers by the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Defence.

The EASO Seminar is an annual event organised by the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies, since 2009, as a platform for discussion among local defence and security officials, on regional security-related issues.
