THE Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) recently organised a signing ceremony for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and an Apprenticeship Training Agreement (ATA) at The Rizqun International Hotel in Gadong.
The ceremony was attended by Ajman bin Haji Meludin, the Commissioner of Labour at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
A total of 40 students are enrolled in the National Technical Education Certificate (NTec) Apprenticeship Scheme of July 2017 with PAR Food and Beverages, Jollibee Brunei, Entrek (B) Sdn Bhd and Serikandi Café and Restaurant.
In his welcoming remarks, Lim Kian Boon, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Development) at IBTE, said the local food and beverage (F&B) service industry is one of the largest service sectors as well as one of the largest employers in Brunei.
“To this end, the Brunei Government believes that this sector will continue to assist in our united efforts to create a strong diverse and sustainable economy,” he said. “The food and beverage industry has given such a positive impact on the economy, as it enables us all to move closer to the government’s diversification goal of Vision 2035.
“Through this scheme, IBTE believes that it will foster the establishment of a long-lasting partnership with industries in providing training to our youths to fulfil the market demand in the food and beverage industry.
Unlike other forms of training, the Dual-System Apprenticeship (DSA) allows trainees to earn and learn at the same time. Students who train under this scheme will undergo both institution based training and on-the-job training.
“Apprenticeship is an effective means of bridging school and the world of employment for young people, by making it possible for them to acquire work experience along with technical and professional training. Through this type of training, the apprentices acquire skills and develop their confidence and competence in the chosen trade.”
The DSA model at IBTE is similar to the dual system of training employed by many developed countries in Europe, where the training schedule for the current programme will be carried out on a block release basis in which the apprentices will undergo a year of institution-based training during their first and third semesters, and a year of on-the-job training during their second and fourth semesters.
