ABANG Md Saifulizam bin Abang Zamhor has emerged as the grand prize winner of the Canon PhotoMarathon Brunei Darussalam 2017, winning himself an all-expense paid photography trip across Japan as part of the PhotoMarathon Asia Championship, travelling alongside winners from 12 others countries.
The announcement was made during an event at Tarindak D’Seni hosted by Interhouse Company Ltd.
The PhotoMarathon is a popular photo competition requiring participants to create photographic masterpieces according to assigned themes and allocated time.
Interhouse Company Deputy Managing Director Vincent Goh told the Bulletin that the PhotoMarathon was split into three themes. To qualify for the grand prize draw, participants must take part in all three categories, and their photos will be judged as a whole.
The three themes were ‘Left Behind’, ‘Upside Down’, and ‘The Moment’.
The Left Behind category winner were Ling Yang Hui in first place, followed by Awangku Fathur Rahman bin Pengiran Haji Mohammad and Abang Md Saifulizam.
The Upside Down category saw Masadezam bin Masle taking first place, followed by Lim Kian Chiong and Codie de Vera Camera.
Nurhani Basirah binti Haji Chipli emerged victor in The Moment category, followed by Shah Faisal bin Mohd Yakob and Pengiran Haji Mohd Heris bin Pengiran Mohammed.
Vincent said this year is a significant one for Canon, with the company notching two major production milestones – a cumulative total of 90 million silver halide (film) and interchangeable-lens cameras on September 20, and 130 million EF-series interchangeable lenses on October 12.
An EOS 5D Mark IV was the 90 millionth EOS Series camera produced, while an EF 16-35 f/2.8L III USM became the company’s 130 millionth EF-series interchangeable lens produced.
Canon is not just about photography, Vincent said, explaining that the company also produces output devices such as the pro series range printers and large format printers capable of printing 44-inch width and 70 -inch length poster size print.
“This is our sixth year hosting a photo marathon and we want all photographers to join regardless of their cameras – either Canon or others. Year on year the event has brought people together in a joyous occasion, building a happy community of photographers. As per registration numbers, today we have 330 participants,” he said.
The event started at 9am and lasted into the late afternoon. During the two-hour judging break before the announcement of the winners, an interactive photography seminar was presented by professional Malaysian photographer Teoh Peng Kee.
