PEHIN Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports yesterday officially launched the opening ceremony of the 10th Special Olympics Borneo Cup and 1st Unified Football Games at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.
Organised by Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam (SOBD), the sporting event brings together approximately 150 athletes (unified and non-unified) from Brunei, Sabah, Sarawak, Labuan and Kalimantan, Indonesia.
Thirteen teams are participating in the tournament, which include seven unified teams and six special Olympics teams.
Yesterday’s opening began with the singing of national anthems by all contingents, followed by a march past led by the Royal Brunei Armed Forces band.
After the launch, the minister was introduced to athletes, committee members as well as volunteers from various learning institutions in Brunei Darussalam.
The ceremony also marked the first games of the tournament, which saw Brunei ‘A’ lose to Labuan 1-0 and Brunei ‘B’ defeated by Sarawak 4-3.
More matches will be played today and tomorrow at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.
